Committee Compensation - [GZIL Collective]

Summary
Following positive engagement around this topic in the GZIL Collective community Telegram group, we are bringing this proposal to the Governance Portal for a formal temperature check.

This proposal seeks community feedback on whether the GZIL Collective Committee should receive a modest monthly compensation for the operational work required to administer the Collective and run future grant seasons.

This is a temperature check only and does not implement compensation. If the community is supportive, a formal Snapshot vote will follow.

Background
Over the past year, the gZIL Committee has been responsible for establishing and operating the Collective, including:
• Creating the framework, documentation, and website
• Reviewing grant applications
• Coordinating with project teams
• Setting up and managing governance votes
• Evaluating milestones and managing payouts
• Handling accounting and operational administration

With the workload involved in administrating the Collective and the grant seasons, some questions have been raised by grantees around whether the current volunteer‑only setup is sustainable. We appreciate that feedback, and it’s something we’ve been thinking about carefully as we prepare for Season 2.

Season 2 will be larger in scope, with more proposals, projects, and more admin. To ensure the Collective continues to operate smoothly and with the level of diligence and engagement the community deserves, we’d like to check whether the community supports introducing a modest monthly compensation for committee members.

Proposal
The Committee proposes the following for community consideration:
Compensation: Up to $500 per month per committee member
Start date: Beginning Q2 2026 (aligned with Season 2 preparations)
Retroactivity: No retroactive compensation
Purpose: To ensure consistent, timely, and sustainable administration of the Collective as workload increases

This proposal does not change the governance structure, voting power, or decision‑making authority of gZIL holders. It is solely focused on operational sustainability.

Voting Options
YES — I support introducing modest monthly compensation for committee members (up to $500/month each), starting in Q2 2026, with no retroactive pay.

NO — I do not support introducing compensation for committee members at this time.

Next Steps
If the community expresses support:

  • A formal Snapshot proposal will be drafted.
  • If successful, implementation will begin ahead of Season 2.

If the community does not support the proposal, no further action will be taken.

  • YES
  • NO

This is fair.

In addition I think going forward there should probably also be a process in place for when one or multiple committee members become inactive. So that things can always move forward swiftly.

This feels pretty straightforward to me as here is a real amount of time and effort that goes into managing something like this well. If we want the Collective to keep running properly as scope increases, some level of compensation makes sense. It creates better alignment, helps keep the operational side sharp, and makes it more realistic to maintain the same level of care and consistency over time.

Yea seems fair to me, there is time involved to do this job. I too also think need to ensure that committee members that arent active for the month are paid - if its a paid position you need to be active.
